Chatbots are quickly revolutionizing the modern workforce and creating a new job market of automated workers. As technology advances, more and more companies have embraced chatbot-based solutions as a way to increase efficiency and cut costs.
ChatGPT and other AI tools greatly impact fields such as education, law, and government – with the ability to create written materials efficiently, like high school essays, legal documents, and legislation. These chatbot systems make the application of artificial intelligence possible to produce results at unprecedented speed.
With the onset of Artificial Intelligence technology revolutionizing the workforce, it presents challenges as some employees will have to face displacement to make way. However, similar to other advances in digital technology, an optimistic outlook comes with it; chances of creating new avenues are boundless and could potentially open up numerous.
Experts suggest that AI tools like ChatGPT are set to take over various workplace tasks shortly. These tasks include automated customer service, calendar scheduling, natural language processing, email sorting and summarization, report writing and proofreading, data entry, and extracting essential facts from documents.
Computer Programming
ChatGPT is capable of programming applications and software through writing code. Additionally, it can detect errors in coders’ language and convert plain English thoughts into a programming language form.
Oded Netzer, a professor at Columbia Business School, spoke to CBS MoneyWatch regarding an issue of great importance to him. In the discussion, Netzer emphasized the magnitude of the topic and its implications.
The professor says:
“In terms of jobs, I think it’s primarily an enhancer than full replacement of jobs,”
“Coding and programming is a good example of that. It actually can write code quite well.”
Programming tasks that used to be managed manually by humans could now more easily be automated – leading to a host of new possibilities in computing.
The professor went on to say:
“If you are writing a code where really all you do is convert an idea to a code, the machine can do that. To the extent we would need fewer programmers, it could take away jobs. But it would also help those who program to find mistakes in codes and write code more efficiently”
Basic Email
ChatGPT, a tool, could easily outsource simple administrative/scheduling emails that involve setting up/canceling appointments. As per Netzer, this could save time and effort on the user’s part.
The professor continues to say:
“There’s hardly any creativity involved, so why would we write the whole thing instead of saying to the machine, ‘I need to set a meeting on this date.'”
Mid-Level Writing
Autor, a renowned MIT economist focusing on labor, claimed that among mid-level white-collar jobs, there are functions that AI may take in its stride, such as human resources letters authorship, advertising content production, and press releases composition.

“Bots will be much more in the realm of people who do a mixture of intuitive and mundane tasks like writing basic advertising copy, first drafts of legal documents. Those are expert skills, and there is no question that software will make them cheaper and therefore devalue human labor.”
Jobs that require human interaction and low cognitive skills are the most likely to be replaced by chatbots like ChatGPT. With this in mind, it’s important to consider what kind of future we want for ourselves and our children. Do we want a world where machines can do everything better than us? Or do we want a world where humans still have an essential role to play? It’s up to us to decide.
