Elon Musk, the well-known entrepreneur and tech innovator, has recently made headlines for his plan to recruit a team of developers to create an anti-“woke” AI to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Musk has been a vocal critic of the current trends in AI, particularly regarding what he perceives as the dangers of “woke” culture and political correctness.
His proposed AI would be designed to push back against these perceived biases and offer a more objective, neutral perspective. While the idea has been met with some controversy and criticism, it is clear that Musk’s ambition and vision for the potential of AI remain as strong as ever.
Fresh Start
Elon Musk, a tech guru well-versed in many different areas, appears to be attempting to compete with OpenAI, the company he co-founded but eventually left by creating his own AI that is opposed to “woke” movements.
The Information has reported that Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, Tesla, and SpaceX, has been in contact with Artificial Intelligence (AI) researchers to create an alternative to ChatGPT. This comes after he publicly disagreed with the chatbot built by a firm he left two years ago due to contrasting beliefs.
Igor Babuschkin, a renowned machine learning expert and former Google DeepMind employee, has been pegged as the potential head of an upcoming AI research firm. This was confirmed to The Information by Babuschkin himself after he announced his departure from Google DeepMind last week.
Babuschkin divulged to the website that he has not inked any agreement with Musk yet. However, he is keen on collaborating with him.
Mind Attacks
At times Musk has complemented the influential chatbot from his past AI group since its launch in November, but he has frequently gone to Twitter to criticize it, particularly for being “woke.”
Musk warned in December that teaching AI to be aware of current issues and pretend they are true could be fatal.
Last week, he severely criticized OpenAI in response to his received critiques.
Musk says:
“OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it “Open” AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google, but now it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.”
“Not what I intended at all.”
Musk may have been the one to name OpenAI. However, there’s no way to verify this claim. What is certain is that his company, founded in 2015, recently entered into a reportedly high-value deal with Microsoft – the outcome of which was Microsoft’s Bing AI chatbot disaster.
ChatGPT has been known to create bios that contain many lies when tasked with writing them for people.
What does the future of AI look like with Elon Musk? Will this AI stand up against other “woke” AIs and push them aside? So far, it’s impossible to say what this might be. One thing is for sure, though – no matter which way you spin it, having a world-renowned innovator like Elon Musk at the forefront of something so monumental is a tremendous opportunity to watch and learn from his journey.
The implications of his latest project are immense and only time will tell what effect this AI will have on society and technology. As the leader in disruptive innovation, it is exciting to see how he changes the face of modern AI technology as we know it today.
