OpenAI Stops Using Customer Data in Training Models | Update & Impact

OpenAI is changing its developer policy, in response to negative reactions from developers and users, with the simultaneous release of the ChatGPT and Whisper APIs this morning.

OpenAI has announced that from now on, customers and organizations who submit data through its API must choose to allow their parts to be used for service improvements and AI model training. Consequently, such data will only be utilized when given a specific opt-in.

The company is introducing a 30-day data retention policy for all API users, offering the possibility to adjust this advocacy depending on individual needs. To clarify their terms, they also plainly specify that clients own the input and output models created by their platform.

OpenAI opens up the idea that users of its API have owned their input & output data, which could include text, pictures, or other files – a concept that Brockman (president and chairman of OpenAI) outlines as customary rather than a change.

OpenAI advises against sharing sensitive information while conversing with ChatGPT as it cannot guarantee that they will remain secure.

Brockman went on to say:

“Not able to delete specific prompts from [users’ histories].”

OpenAI’s goal of scaling up massively is aided by offering increased data retention options to customers while enabling them to decline to submit their data for training purposes, thereby trying to broaden the platform’s appeal.

OpenAI is replacing its pre-launch review process with a largely automated system as part of its new policy. This transition away from their current method will lead to developers having more access and faster acceleration in designing new AI products.

OpenAI’s review staff can take advantage of the automated system, which paves the way for better and quicker approval of the developers and related apps for its APIs. Consequently, this could result in higher volumes.
