Confessing, the man considered “the godfather of artificial intelligence” has something to say – and for those hoping for humanity’s survival in a world with AI, it is not the most wanted news.
Despite his confidence, Geoffrey Hinton told CBS that AI’s inventions are comparable to others, such as electricity and the wheel. In other words, he’s proud of his contribution to it and shared where he believes AI is heading.
What we are currently observing regarding AI advancements is an unexpected leap in the progress of general-purpose AI development. This advancement includes improved speech recognition and the ability to answer questions. Nonetheless, let us return to the possibility of a doomsday scenario involving AI.
Geoffrey Hinton says:
“Until quite recently, I thought it was going to be like 20 to 50 years before we have general purpose AI. And now I think it may be 20 years or less.”
“I think it’s not inconceivable. That’s all I’ll say.”
Hinton, a computer scientist now employed by Google and a university in Canada, thinks we shouldn’t overly fret about AI being a danger to human life. According to him, although this could be catastrophic in the future, it is still too far away. He expressed these sentiments to CBS.
Geoffrey Hinton went on to say:
“I think it’s very reasonable for people to be worrying about these issues now, even though it’s not going to happen in the next year or two. ”People should be thinking about those issues.”
As we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible with AI, it is important to remember the legacy of Marvin Minsky and his work’s impact on our world. His life-changing confession reminds us that even the greatest minds can struggle with personal demons and that our greatest achievements often come at a cost.
