Starting this fall, Plainfield High School will educate its students on artificial intelligence as it advances globally. As AI remains one of the most-discussed topics among citizens today, high schoolers need to understand this cutting-edge technology comprehensively.
At Plainfield High School, Nicholas Bousquet, the Lead Computer Science Teacher, is introducing a new class – one of the first of its kind in Connecticut. This class will allow students to learn more about computer science.
Bousquet says:
“Many times when a student is using their phone they’re using it as a consumer and doing it very passively.”
“What we’re hoping to do is to give students the tools that they can use to creatively engage the world and make a positive change.”
Makenzie Ezzell and Chase Walker, two freshmen from Plainfield High, have decided to sign up for a course starting next school year.
Walker says:
“I figured it should be pretty fun class to take, definitely interesting, our future will definitely be very AI related.”
Walker has aspirations of entering the railroad industry, while Ezzell is still undecided about what she’ll pursue.
Ezzell says:
“I like to think computers kind of build our future.”
This course offers students credit all school year for learning how computer algorithms operate to interpret maps and the science behind nourishing plants through technology.
Bousquet went on to say:
“We want to make sure because students lives are being shaped by AI now that they have a deeper understanding of machine learning the algorithms that power these technologies.”
Students from Plainfield have a lot of enthusiasm for what Artificial Intelligence has in store for them. They look forward to the advancements in technology and the knowledge that can come with it.
Walker continues to say:
“It was definitely a nice surprise to learn that there’s so much tech related stuff here.”
Ezzell went on to say:
“We need to focus on this because if we don’t learn about it then we won’t know what’s exactly happening.”
The decision to teach AI at Plainfield High School is a positive step towards preparing students for the future and addressing the growing skills gap in the technology industry. It is a forward-thinking approach that will benefit both students and society.
