Google’s decision to open-source its AI language model, PaLM, marks an important step forward in Natural Language Processing (NLP). By making this technology available to researchers worldwide, Google empowers them to build upon the progress already made in the field and create new applications and tools to benefit society.
Through a new API, Google provides developers access to one of its most advanced AI language models, PaLM. The search giant has unveiled a collection of AI enterprise tools permitting businesses to produce text, videos, audio, images, and more from simple natural language commands.
In April 2022, Google announced PaLM, a large language model (LLM) similar to OpenAI’s GPT series and Meta’s LLaMA family of models. PaLM is versatile and can execute text generation and editing operations like other LLMs.
You could use PaLM to replicate conversational chatbot functionality similar to ChatGPT or apply it for summarizing text and writing code – features also recently introduced by Google Workspace, such as Google Docs and Gmail.
Google is introducing MakerSuite, a new application along with the PaLM API, to simplify the process of teaching PaLM to accomplish particular assignments for developers.
The company spokesperson says:
“With MakerSuite, you’ll be able to iterate on prompts, augment your dataset with synthetic data, and easily tune custom models.”
Google has stated that this adjustment, necessary for forming a user-friendly AI system, can be done even in a web browser with the heavy computing activities taken care of by Google Cloud.
Google is enhancing its Vertex AI platform by incorporating generative AI capabilities. This platform was designed to aid businesses in training and deploying machine learning models and launching the PaLM API.
Vertex will be provided with models created by Google Research and DeepMind, its AI-focused subsidiary, in addition to having the potential to leverage open-source and third-party systems in the future.
And finally, Google is also launching a new platform called Generative AI App Builder. The company says this platform “allows developers to quickly ship new experiences including bots, chat interfaces, custom search engines, digital assistants, and more. Developers have API access to Google’s foundation models and can use out-of-the-box templates to jumpstart the creation of gen apps in minutes or hours.”
This initiative by Google is mainly driven towards providing AI tools to businesses, although it may seem dull. Nonetheless, it is a major step in allowing companies to access more Artificial Intelligence resources.
By providing businesses access to PaLM, it will be possible for them to construct new AI language services, as with OpenAI’s language APIs that caused a surge of startups. Simply put, the API of PaLM will act as an additional catalyst for novel AI advancements in 2023.
