Transitioning from a coding enthusiast to a full-fledged software engineer is a challenge for anyone—even those with an extensive background in programming. However, ChatGPT proved their worth and landed one of the hardest engineering jobs at Google, obtaining a Level 3 Engineer role and negotiating upwards of $183k on salary!
This amazing feat proves that passion, hard work, and dedication can truly pay off—and provide you with access to some of the most coveted jobs in tech. This blog post will explore how ChatGPT prepared for their Google interview process and see what life is like inside these highly sought-after positions.
Based on an internal document, Google used coding interview questions to assess ChatGPT and decided it was suitable for a level three engineering position.
CNBC reported that Google has been running tests on multiple AI chatbots, potentially intending to include them on their website. High-fidelity answers could save users time, typically surfing links on Google to find the same information.
The document states that ChatGPT was remarkably successful in their interview for a coding position at L3, considered an introductory-level job on the engineering team at Google. However, the average total compensation for this role is an impressive $183,000.
The technical questions that ChatGPT passed form the cornerstone of Google’s software engineer interview process. However, behavioral examples (“Tell me about a time…”) also play a role in this process and are used by companies such as Facebook, Amazon, and others for leadership roles. This may present an obstacle for “hiring” ChatGPT.
The revelation that ChatGPT can answer the technical questions of coding interviews has prompted queries regarding how much this platform could alter not only Google but also the engineering roles it encompasses. Is this effect already being seen, and if so, will it have a more pronounced impact in five or twenty years?
When PCMag asked ChatGPT whether it would ever supersede software engineers, the program needed to be more confident of its ability.
The AI stated that ChatGPT is not a substitute for software engineers. It can only help with certain jobs and not replicate humans’ innovative, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities. Moreover, people must monitor and guide it to work properly.
We inquired if this would still be true in twenty years or whether lower-level positions may be more exposed to being replaced by ChatGPT. It responded that it could potentially affect those positions; however, it re-emphasized that it will never entirely substitute a human software engineer but rather act as a tool to aid them. Impressive indeed – an AI bot and a PR machine working together.

ChatGPT has informed PCMag that it is not ready to substitute for programmers yet, and won’t be for the next two decades either, according to Emily Dreibelbis from ChatGPT.ccording to Emily Dreibelbis from ChatGPT.
In addition to a recent study showing that ChatGPT can detect and repair faulty code, Google’s findings have brought the software engineering world into the same discourse concerning the effect of AI on the future that artists, reporters, and business owners are having.
Many engineers have indicated, via thousands of comments on Reddit posts, that they are now using ChatGPT to reduce the time spent seeking coding solutions on popular sites such as StackOverflow(Opens in a new window). Additionally, some are taking advantage of it to create small bits of code. Unfortunately, only some are content with ChatGPT’s capabilities and tendency to give lengthy or nonsensical responses.
It is yet to be determined whether the tool will lead to fewer engineering jobs at a basic level or aid in speeding up specialization in the whole industry.
ChatGPT needs more time to be ready to work with business teams and executives to discuss and brainstorm technical solutions. It started to PCMag that “When AI is extensively used in the workplace, there are ethical and social issues that must be taken into account.”
