A new study from the Medical University of Vienna explored the idea that artificial intelligence may be used to tackle many of today’s pressing societal challenges. The research analyzed AI solutions and assessed their ability to address various megatrends.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) can offer insight into the colliding issues associated with “megatrends” and how, if AI systems were to be employed, these could be used to create opportunities that would positively affect various areas. This has been argued in the recently released journal article published in Systems.
The utilization of OpenAI’s Generative Pre-Trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) by Daniela Haluza and David Jungwirth of MedUni Vienna’s Center for Public Health was investigated to ascertain the potential AI progressions concerning societal megatrends.
Digitization, urbanization, and globalization are three major worldwide issues. And they are linked to other global issues, including climate change, automation, mobility, health-related matters, population aging, the emergence of new markets, and the pursuit of sustainability.
Interaction with the AI led to an analysis determining that the assistance of this technology could sharpen insights into how these megatrends may evolve and the resolution of such trends. Results suggest that AI can notably improve our comprehension of such megatrends.
Haluza says:
“Our exploratory study shows that AI provides GPT-3 with easy-to-understand insights into the complex and cross-cutting matters of the megatrends and how they could change and benefit in different areas if AI systems are deployed.”
Jungwirth adds:
“In addition, GPT-3 has illustrated several solution ideas for each of the ten societal megatrends and provided suggestions for further scientific research in these areas.”
Artificial Intelligence tools such as GPT-3 could have substantial potential for affecting socio-economic megatrends, a point the author speaks to. Although much is still needed before AI can be applied successfully, there is a sizable body of proof that correctly implemented AI could bring positive changes.
New AI technologies are being suggested as potential solutions, requiring further research and exploration to address the various challenges in the healthcare field. To add further insight into this endeavor, studies should look into utilizing these new AI technologies for optimization in healthcare effectively.
Discussion on Infallibility Is Needed, But Ethical Considerations Must Account
AI systems have become increasingly advanced. However, Error can still occur in outcomes, and drawbacks remain, something that the Haluza study reckons with. Despite current enthusiasm around AI technology, the study introduces a practical approach and acknowledges its limitations.
Haluza says:
“One problem is also that AI GPT-3 only provides useful answers if the question is very precisely formulated, and even then it simply invents content without labeling. Garbage in, garbage out.”
The potential usefulness of AI for use cases such as summarization and abbreviation could be awarded based on our study results.
The authors emphasize that ethical contemplation on the broader implementation of AI in producing scientific research should be conducted shortly, urging alteration to editorial regulations – most likely ordinances prohibiting co-authorships between robots and individuals, insertion of obligatory effective utilities for examining automated articles and opposing permissions for AI to work with scholarly works.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown tremendous potential in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges. With its ability to process vast amounts of data and identify patterns, AI has the potential to revolutionize fields such as healthcare, energy, and transportation, among others. AI can also help address global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and food insecurity by providing insights and solutions that were previously impossible.
However, as AI continues to evolve, it is important to ensure its use is ethical and responsible. There are concerns about the impact of AI on jobs, privacy, and security, and it is crucial to address these issues to maximize the benefits of AI while minimizing the risks.
