Turnitin, a widely-used tool by educators to detect plagiarism in students’ works, revealed on Monday the addition of its “AI detection capabilities” inspired by the development of ChatGPT and other AI tools.
With 98 percent accuracy, Turnitin claims it can identify “the utilization of AI-based writing tools such as ChatGPT.” This announcement was made in a press release.
CEO Chris Caren says:
“Educators told us that being able to accurately detect AI written text is their first priority right now,”
“It is equally important that detection technology becomes a seamless part of their existing workflow, which we have done by integrating AI detection capabilities into Turnitin solutions.”
For over two years, Turnitin has been developing the technology to detect GPT3, used in AI-based technologies, including ChatGPT.
Educators can utilize Turnitin’s AI detector to measure the number of sentences in a written submission that may have been generated by artificial intelligence. This helps them decide whether to inspect further, ask questions, or talk with the student.
K-12 and higher education educators have been divided regarding ChatGPT – the innovative AI technology. While some embrace its potential positively, others worry about how AI can prevent cheating.
Turnitin announced the incorporation of AI detection into its services, benefiting its 2.1 million users, mainly educators. Additionally, Turnitin developed a resource page with guidance about adapting integrity measures to the modern age with AI writing advances and updates about related improvements.
The release of ChatGPT to the public was only six months ago, and its developers have already made great improvements to it; this Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology will only continue to advance.
Turnitin’s AI detection for plagiarism is an incredibly powerful tool that can help educators and students maintain academic integrity and ensure that original work is properly recognized. With the ability to compare submitted work against a vast database of sources, Turnitin’s technology can accurately identify instances of plagiarism and provide a detailed report for review.
However, it is important to remember that the technology is not infallible and should be used to supplement human judgment and evaluation. Additionally, students should understand the importance of avoiding plagiarism and take steps to cite and attribute sources in their work properly. With the responsible use of Turnitin’s AI detection, educators and students can work together to create a culture of academic honesty and integrity.
