GM is looking into the potential of incorporating an AI voice assistant into their vehicles; Barra revealed to Fox Business anchor Liz Claman when asked about it on Tuesday. The CEO mentioned Ultifi, GM’s comprehensive vehicle software platform, in the discussion.
In an interview, Barra discussed topics involving artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and the current production stoppage due to supply chain problems at one of GM’s truck factories.
Barra says:
“It’s one of many things we can put on the vehicle. The vehicle really is a software platform and starting in 2019, General Motors started rolling out vehicles where you could do over-the-air updates for almost every module in the vehicle.”
Salaried workers should think carefully about the generous buyout package offered by GM.
Barra went on to say:
“Having an assistant with a voice that’s clear enough where you can ask questions and get answers, I think that’s what the artificial intelligence will enable us to do.”
“We’ll be able to make your car better as you own it.”
Stuart Fowle, a GM representative, has not yet definitively revealed their plans to employ an AI voice assistant; however, their software engineers are exploring this option. Fowle added that the advancement would encompass more than just improvements to voice commands.
Fowle says:
“As part of its growth strategy, General Motors views digital software and services as a core market where we intend to lead within the transportation sector. The Ultifi software platform the company will deploy this year will enable a new era of software-defined vehicles with digital experiences that can grow and evolve over time,”
At the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Barra spoke and then conducted an interview. In front of her stood a Cruise Origin, which she labeled as a “purpose-built ride share vehicle.”
Barra continues to say:
“We’ll have this on the road yet this year,”
“Up and running.”
A reference is made to Cruise’s modified Chevrolet Bolt robo-taxis in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Austin, where the technology has been implemented.
Barra went on to say:
“This technology is here. This vehicle’s going to be on the road, and you’re just going to see rideshare and autonomous vehicles just continue to grow.”
GM’s job cuts did not impress analysts, which left some of its employees distressed. In February, the Free Press reported that GM was still awaiting approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to deploy the Origin.
Barra adds:
“A small bus-like vehicle that will transport up to six people without a driver. It operates through autonomous technology and has no manual steering controls or pedals.”
“Depends on how satisfactorily GM answers some big questions NHTSA is asking about the operational safety of the self-driving cars Cruise already has on roads now. In some cases, those cars have caused traffic backups and other public safety disruptions.”
Recently, Tesla vehicles were subject to an extensive recall due to issues with their self-driving technology, which has caused a stir in the headlines.
NHTSA says:
“Full self-driving beta.”
“The software may cause crashes by allowing vehicles to perform unsafe actions.”
When enquired about developing Cruise’s approval, spokesman Darryll Harrison Jr. stated that the company had no new information regarding Cruise Origin.
Barra was questioned in her Fox interview concerning the work stoppage at GM’s Silao, Mexico manufacturing facility, where the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are manufactured.
Barra commented that the situation is improving; GM will be upping their production quarter by quarter this year, emphasizing the skills necessary to become a premier test car driver at Milford Proving Ground.
Barra continues to say:
“It’s what we’ve been dealing with for the last several years now, semiconductor shortages. The supply chain through COVID has just been stretched so tight, and we all know what happened as far as semiconductors,”
In response to inquiries regarding the closure, the company stated that operations at the plant are expected to resume on Tuesday. Barra further commented on how auto lending and any new regulations due to recent bank collapses, such as Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, could affect them; she indicated they had their own GM Financial arm in place.
“With that we’re going to be in great shape to serve the customer.”

“Great faith in that team.”
