The ChatGPT frenzy has swept China as companies scramble for home-grown options to meet the growing demand for conversational AI. ChatGPT, which stands for Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer, is a state-of-the-art language model developed by OpenAI that has been making waves in the AI industry.
The popularity of ChatGPT can be attributed to its ability to generate human-like text based on user input. This technology has applications in various industries, such as customer service, content creation, and language translation. With its high accuracy and ability to understand and respond to natural language inputs, ChatGPT is a valuable tool for companies looking to enhance their customer experience.
OpenAI, supported by Microsoft, has prevented users in China from accessing its popular ChatGPT application. However, the program has been arousing much fascination in the nation. Companies rush to incorporate this technology into their merchandise and create similar programs.
Residents in the country cannot gain access to the AI chatbot via OpenAI accounts, yet some have bypassed this restriction with the help of virtual private networks and foreign phone numbers.
Simultaneously, the OpenAI models utilized in the ChatGPT program, capable of creating essays, recipes, and intricate computer code, can be easily accessed in China and are being progressively implemented into Chinese consumer technology applications from social media to online shopping.
The tool’s rapidly increasing fame is sparking recognition in China of how innovative American AI technology is and, as per experts, the huge gap between tech companies in the second-largest global economy as they strive hard to keep up.
According to reports, Ding Daoshi, an independent internet analyst and ex-director of Beijing’s Sootoo consultancy, declared.
Ding Daoshi says:
“There is huge excitement around ChatGPT. Unlike the metaverse which faces huge difficulty in finding real-life application, ChatGPT has suddenly helped us achieve human-computer interaction.”
“The changes it will bring about are more immediate, more direct and way quicker.”
OpenAI does not permit individuals in mainland China, Hong Kong, Iran, Russia, and certain parts of Africa to register for their services; however, ChatGPT itself is not prohibited by the Chinese government.
OpenAI told Reuters they are working hard to ensure their services become more attainable. The company from the city of San Francisco shared this information via an email statement.
Our goal is to have our technology accessible in all countries. However, certain circumstances make it complicated or impossible for us to achieve that in alignment with our purpose.
We are striving to expand the number of spots where people can have secure and advantageous access to our resources.
In December, as per media reports, Tencent Holdings’ (0700. HK) WeChat, China’s largest messaging app, closed down several ChatGPT-related programs on the platform. Despite that, such programs have still been popping up in many places.
Dozens of computer programs that use ChatGPT technology have shown up on WeChat, with enthusiasts creating them to make programs or automated accounts capable of talking to people. One account charges 9.99 yuan ($1.47) in exchange for answering 20 queries.
Tencent, a Chinese technology giant, has been instrumental in developing ChatGPT, a system capable of engaging in conversation in Chinese. This has led to its unofficial adoption throughout the country; however, Tencent did not respond to Reuters’ request for comments.
Proxy tools or existing partnerships with Microsoft, which is investing billions of dollars in OpenAI, are utilized by Chinese firms to gain access to instruments that permit them to incorporate AI technology into their products.
In December, Proximai from Shenzhen added a virtual character to its 3D game-like social app powered by ChatGPT’s technology for conversations. Kunlun Tech, an entertainment software firm in Beijing, intends to implement ChatGPT into their web browser, Opera.
Tiger Global, an investor in Hong Kong-based startup SleekFlow, has incorporated AI into its customer relations messaging systems: Henson Tsai, the originator of SleekFlow.
Henson Tsai says:
“We have clients all over the world.”
“Among other things, ChatGPT does excellent translations, sometimes better than other solutions available on the market.”
The ChatGPT frenzy in China is a testament to the growing demand for conversational AI and the desire among companies to have their home-grown options. Major tech companies such as Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent have taken up the challenge, investing heavily in AI research and development to bring a high-quality ChatGPT model to market.
The competition is fierce, and each company is eager to secure a competitive advantage in the growing conversational AI market. As the race to be the leader in ChatGPT technology continues, we expect continued advancements and innovations in this field.
